چکیده

The influence of water-to-cement mass ratio (w/c) on early-age properties of cementbased materials is investigated using a variety of experimental techniques. Properties that are critical to the early-age performance of these materials are tested, including heat release, semiadiabatic temperature, setting time, autogenous deformation, and strength development. Measurements of these properties using a single cement are presented for four different w/c, ranging from 0.325 to 0.425. Some of the measured properties are observed to vary widely within this range of w/c ratios. The heat release and setting time behaviors of cement pastes are contrasted. While early-age heat release is relatively independent of w/c, the measured setting times vary by several hours between the four w/c investigated in this study, indicating the fundamental differences between a physical process such as setting and heat release which is purely a quantification of chemical reaction. While decreasing w/c certainly increases compressive strength at equivalent ages, it also significantly increases autogenous shrinkage and may increase semi-adiabatic temperature rise, both of which can increase the propensity for early-age cracking in cement-based materials.

A Review of Early-Age Properties of Cement-Based Materials

Immediately after placement, gravitational forces and the local drying environment begin to influence the (micro)structure of a cement paste, mortar, or concrete. Depending on the mixture’s water-to-cementitious materials mass ratio (w/cm) (and aggregate volume fraction), the initial freshly cast material may be thought of either as a concentrated suspension of rigid particles in water or as a ...

Influence of cement content on concrete performance in corrosive environments (sea water)

In this study, the effect of cement content on concrete performance in corrosive environments is investigated on concrete mixtures having the same water/cement (w/c) ratio. Three w/c ratios (0.40, 0.45 and 0.50) were used and for each w/c ratio three mixtures were prepared with cement contents 350, 400 and 450 kg/m3. The compressive strength, electrical resistivity and chloride diffusivity of t...

Influence of Cement Particle-Size Distribution on Early Age Autogenous Strains and Stresses in Cement-Based Materials

The influence of cement particle-size distribution on autogenous strains and stresses in cement pastes of identical waterto-cement ratios is examined for cement powders of four different finenesses. Experimental measurements include chemical shrinkage, to quantify degree of hydration; internal relative humidity development; autogenous deformation; and eigenstress development, using a novel embe...

Physico-Mechanical Properties of Organo-Modified Bentonite Reinforced Cement Mortars

It is demonstrated that the addition of organo-modified Na-bentonite (OMB) particles to Portland cement mortar can promote its physical and mechanical properties. A series of experimental works on some important physico-mechanical properties of Portland cement mortars mixed with various dosages of hydrophobic OMB were performed. The obtained results confirm that the OMB provides a dense packing...
